Spring Equinox Edition, 2008

Announcements

Linda Hogan (Chickasaw), author, beloved friend, and Tapestry board member, has been invited to address the United Nations this April. She is to speak about Intellectual Property Rights, Native literature and presses, and Indigenous traditional knowledge.  Linda has recently taken a new position with the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, where one of her projects will involve setting up a tribal press. Her presentation at The Voice of the Horse last summer, which included selections of poetry from her forthcoming book on mustangs, was one of the highlights of the gathering.

The National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair (NAISEF)will be held March 27-29 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Tapestry Founder and Vision-Keeper Dawn Adams is scheduled to serve as a judge.  NAISEF is sponsored by AISES, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society.  More than 320 science projects, prepared by 380 5th through 12th grade American Indian students, will be on display in the Albuquerque Convention Center.  Learn more online at www.aises.org/Events/NAISEF .

Carol Francisco is looking into the feasibility of printing her digital collage artwork for sale. If you’re interested, please email her at Carol@tapestryinstitute.org. Her wildfire artwork has been taken off-line because it will be included in our wildfire book (in preparation now), and we need your feedback to know what sort of arrangements to make with the book publisher for printing copies.

In February, Tapestry president Jo Belasco visited forester and conservationist Dr. Brian Miller at his Wind River Ranch in near-by Watrous. He and Jo discussed funding opportunities for land purchase in New Mexico, and he offered advice gathered from his years of work in this region. Dr. Miller also shared information about the projects going on at the ranch, including workshops, land restoration, and the management of an Apache buffalo herd being housed there. You can learn more about Wind River Ranch and its projects at www.windriverranch.org.

Got an essay, artwork, a photograph, or a poem to share? An announcement of interest to Tapestry Institute members? Send it to Dawn Adams, Ph.D., The Loom editor for consideration as a part of the Summer Solstice edition of "The Loom". Your submission should be about, or demonstrate, using different ways of knowing, learning about, and responding to the natural world.
